Aims

This course introduces students to the systematic study of language and society. Specifically, it explores how language and its use relate to social attributes. It also discusses the features and functions of code-switching.

Contents

The course covers primarily the following topics:

  • Introduction to sociolinguistics
  • Regional variation
  • Social variation
  • Language and gender
  • Code-switching

Learning support

Regular two-hour tutorials and a supplementary lecture will be arranged.

Assessment

There are three assignments and a final examination.

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
