Aims

The course focuses on cultural heritage and its relationship with tourism. It examines the concepts, issues and development of cultural tourism and heritage protection in the context of increased global interactions. The main themes include conceptualisation, recognition and conservation of tangible and intangible assets, heritage supply and demand, cultural tourism impacts, authenticity issue, as well as managing cultural heritage under globalisation.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  1. Heritage preservation regimes and institutions
  2. Introduction of tangible and intangible cultural heritage
  3. Reasons for the rise of heritage tourism
  4. Heritage tourism supply and demand
  5. Impacts of heritage tourism
  6. Authenticity debate
  7. Tourist gaze and commodification
  8. Managing cultural heritage

Assessment

There will be assignments, projects and examination for the course. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
