What is Advanced Standing?

Advanced Standing deals with credit transfer and exemption matters. The University recognises prior learning achievements of its students at an appropriate level and may award transferred credits in such recognition.

Details for Advanced Standing Scheme for Full-time Undergraduates

  1. Credit Transfer is considered on a course-by-course basis.
  2. Upon approval, the student will earn the credits of the corresponding course(s) that contribute(s) towards the award of the programme.
  3. All credits transferred will be counted towards satisfying the programme requirements for one award only.
  4. Qualifications in satisfying the entry requirements of a programme cannot be used for Credit Transfer within the same programme. For instance, if a student admitted to Bachelor of English Language Studies with Honours of HKMU based on Higher Diploma in English, he/she cannot apply for Credit Transfer based on the entry qualification (i.e. Higher Diploma in English).
  1. Students may be exempted from taking (a) specific course(s) of a programme based on their prior learning achievements.
  2. In the case of approved exemption, students will be required to complete (an)other course(s) to make up for the total number of credits required for the academic award of their programme.
  3. Qualifications in satisfying the entry requirements of a programme cannot be used for Course Exemption within the same programme.
  1. Block Credit Transfer considers the learning experience of students in their prior study.
  2. Block Credit Transfer for University English language courses and/or GE courses is NOT applicable for Year 3 entrants.
  3. In the case of Block Credit Transfer for University English language courses, the medium of instruction and assessments of the prior qualification must be in English.

Application Overview

(3)   Review the application form, and SUBMIT before 22 August 2022

(4)   Await acknowledgement email with payment details

(5)  Pay application fee (HKD$300)

(6)  Await application result for around two weeks of time

Application Details

  1. To apply for Advanced Standing, students will need to submit their online application no later than two weeks before the commencement of the first term (i.e. 22 August 2022) of the Academic Year 2022/23, together with prescribed supporting documents. Late applications will NOT be accepted under any circumstances.
  2. For outbound exchange students, the credits earned at the host institutions can be transferred to their academic records at the University. Upon returning from the exchange studies, students should submit an application before the commencement of the next school term, together with prescribed supporting documents.
  1. Students should fill in the online application form.
  2. Students then attach clear and readable supporting documents (in .pdf/.doc/.jpg /.zip formats only) prescribed in the form, such as –
    • detailed course outlines/syllabuses with topics covered, assessment methods, and total learning time (including hours of lectures/seminars/tutorials, and other forms of notional learning such as on-line learning, practical learning and self-study);
    • award certificate(s); and
    • academic transcript(s).
  3. Students should review the completed application form and make sure all the provided information are accurate before submission.
  4. Students will receive an acknowledgement email upon their submission of application and supporting documents within three working days from the Registry.
  5. Students will be requested to pay an application fee of HKD$300, which is non-refundable and non-transferrable, according to the email acknowledgement.
  1. Students will be notified of the application result before the add/drop period.
  2. If students wish to appeal against the application result after the release of notification, they must contact the Advanced Standing and Graduation Team (tel: 2768-6624; email: regaso@hkmu.edu.hk) within two weeks. Appeal can only be made ONCE.
  3. The granting of credits and/or course exemptions shall only be applicable to the courses specified in the Result Notification for one programme only. 
  1. Name ALL files as “SURNAMES_GIVENNAMES_’type of document'”, e.g.
    CHAN_TAIMAN_transcript, CHAN_TAIMAN_certificate,
    CHAN_TAIMAN_syllabus, and CHAN_TAIMAN_specification.
  2. Only 1 file of max. 50MB can be uploaded for each heading. No deletion is allowed, but replacement.
  3. Under each type of documents (e.g. Award Certificate / Academic Transcript / Course Syllabus / Programme Specification), only 1 file for 1 qualification is allowed. Zip the
    files when needed. For instance:
    a student with 2 previous studies: 1 file for course syllabi of HD in ComputingCOMP 1234, COMP3233, and INTG2234; and 1 file for course syllabus of AD in Internet TechnologyCOMM 2468
  1. Students are encouraged to seek academic advice from the Programme/Department on their studies prior to applying for transfer of credits and exemption.
  2. Application for Advanced Standing of any types is a one-off exercise during the course of students' study at the University, except for newly gained qualifications after admission.
  3. Any incomplete application with insufficient documentary proof will be rejected automatically.
  4. Any wilful dishonesty in the provision of false information may render for refusal of the application.
  5. The University reserves the right to verify the submitted documents, such as a request for in-person verification of true copies. Shall there be any such cases, true copies will be returned to the applicant after verification on-site.
  6. There is Block Credit Transfer for Senior Year Entries, and such application will be considered and made by the programme-offering School upon admission without the need for a separate application.
  7. JUPAS students are NOT eligible for any subsequent Advanced Standing arrangement based on their entry qualifications.
  8. A course previously studied at another institute may be nominated for more than one relevant course in an HKMU programme for Credit Transfer/Course Exemption, such as:
    the course of HD in Technology – ‘Technology Fundamentals‘ nominated for Credit Transfer to the courses (1) ‘Introduction to Technology‘ and (2) ‘IT Basics‘ in an HKMU programme. Despite the number of nominations, the same course of prior studies could only be used once when an HKMU course is granted for transfer/exemption.
  9. The maximum number of credits transferred is capped at 50% of the total credit requirement for the academic award of the respective programme.
