COVID-19 Arrangement

Being an integral part of an advancing metropolis, we offer a wide range of innovative, professional and industry-responsive programmes to meet your learning aspirations and address the contemporary needs of the city and neighbouring regions.

Computer Engineering

All Computer Engineering programmes, including those with pathways are phasing out starting from the 2021 Spring Term. For new admission, please consider other programmes.

This programme provides comprehensive knowledge of a wide range of electronic principles, practical skills in electronics and the capacity to analyse and synthesize circuits and devices. The Honours programme gives students the opportunity to specialize in certain areas of electronics, and includes training in independent project work.

Graduates are qualified to embark on a career as an electronic design engineer, analyst or consultant.

Entry Requirements:

  • BSCCE & BSCHCE: Admission is open to anyone in Hong Kong over the age of 17.
  • BSCCE1 &BSCHCE1: a student shall normally possess a higher diploma or associate degree in a discipline closely related to Computer Engineering.
  • BSCCE2 &BSCHCE2: a student shall normally possess the Certificate in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering awarded by The Open University of Hong Kong.

Mode of Study:

  • Distance learning
  • In distance learning, students are provided with self-study materials which allow them to study at their own pace. Tutors will provide tutorials and online support.

Programme Structure:

  •  The programme structure and the course outline can be seen in the prospectus. (See the Programme List and Prospectus section above.)

Study Plan:

  • Since most DL students study part-time, at their own pace, the length of time they take to complete their studies varies. For example, most people take around five years to gain the 120 credits needed for a Bachelor's Degree (usually taking one or two courses at a time), but some have managed to compress it into three.
  • Students can take courses in any order (except those with prerequisites). In general, new students are advised to choose a course or courses at the Foundation or Middle level that are listed for the programme.

Credit Exemption – Pathway:

  • Pathways (BSCCE1, BSCCE2, BSCHCE1 and BSCHCE2) provide a very convenient means to obtain credit exemption for students holding a relevant qualification.
  • 80 credits are exempted through Pathway 1; 70 credits are exempted through Pathway 2.

Credit Exemption – Advanced Standing:

  • Block Credit Transfer (BCT) is the general means of applying for credit exemption based on your current academic qualification.
  • Application should be submitted to Advanced Standing & Records Office. The office will assess your academic qualification and determine the number of exempted credits.
  • Before your application, you may search for precedent cases for your qualification. The result can be used as an indicator for the assessment of your qualification.
  • There is a charge for BCT application.

Course Fees:

  • The course fee is based on number of credits and course level. For example, a 10-credit middle-level course costs $10,800 in 2016.

Admission:

  • The OUHK has two intakes each year – normally in Autumn Term (September) and Spring Term (January).
  • Admission normally opens three months before the Term starts.
  • Ways to register include online registration and Application by hand.

Krutz Cheuk
Biomedical Engineer
Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital

After graduating from OUHK, Krutz obtained an M.Sc. in Engineering Management from CityU. He is now completing his second master degree, M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering, at CUHK. Krutz has a wide range of working experience. He has been with Siemens, VTech, and PCCW.

Hugo Leung
Software and Hardware Engineer
Innovation Team Company Limited

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
