HKMU Best Buddies Programme - Arts with Intellectual Disability Scheme

[Programme Background]

Co-organized with Fu Hong Society, HKMU Best Buddies Programme – Arts with Intellectual Disability Scheme was launched in Feb, 2023. A total of 16 undergraduate students were recruited to build one-to-one friendship with people with intellectual disabilities through expressive art activities.
During the programme, students and people with intellectual disabilities built up their trust and friendship through different activities, including hand-paintings and Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden visit. In addition, students also prepared booths and activities for their buddies to enjoy during the HKMU Best Buddies Ceremony and Carnival.
The Hong Kong Metropolitan University has also became the new chapter of the “Best Buddies Hong Kong” movement, which will continue to make contribution to an inclusive society.

Briefing and Training Workshop
On 4 Feb 2023 (Sat), Student Affairs Office has organized a briefing and training workshop for students. During the workshop, they could not only participate in expressive art session, but also to express themselves through expressive art. Besides, social workers from Fu Hong Society were also invited to share about the practical skills when interacting with people with intellectual disabilities. 
'Cheer up' Video for Buddies under Covid-19
Due to the outbreak of Covid-19, First Meet with Buddies on 11 Feb 2023 (Sat) was postponed. Although students could not meet their buddies, they have prepared a video for Ngai Shun Home* Buddies to cheer them up. Apart from sharing some preventive measures, students also drew some lovely pictures to encourage them.

*Ngai Shun Home provides residential services for persons with moderate grade intellectual disabilities.

First Meet with Buddies
On 25 May 2023 (Sat) , HKMU students met with their Ngai Shun Home Buddies at the Fu Hong Society Rehabilitation Center for the first time. Through some ice-breaking games, they got to know each other more. In addition, they used their palms to complete a artwork together, canvas with big tree was formed of the means that their friendship is like a big tree that grows strong. They also drew portraits of each other, all of them were looking forward to the next activity.

Visiting the Nature
On March 11, 2023 (Sat), students and Ngai Shun Home buddies had their first outdoor activity at the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden. In addition to strolling around the farm and observing various plants and animals, students and their buddies explored the fun of nature through the Five Senses Bingo Game, and the friendship between them was strengthened.

HKMU Best Buddies Ceremony and Carnival
Co-organized with Fu Hong Society, HKMU Best Buddies Ceremony and Carnival was successfully held on 17 May 2023 (Wed) to promote social inclusion in HKMU and the community. A total of 18 people with intellectual disabilities and 30 student volunteers participated in the activity. Students not only prepared game booths for their buddies, but also developed long-lasting friendships with them.
In addition, HKMU has become the new chapter of “Best Buddies Hong Kong” Movement, which will continue to enhance an inclusive society.
