Using the Medical System to Address the Health Impact of Poverty in Hong Kong

On 11 June 2024, we were honoured to host Dr. Jane Parry, a public health and development analyst and writer, at our N&HS research seminar. Her talk, titled "Using the Medical System to Address the Health Impact of Poverty in Hong Kong", offered essential insights on the role primary care providers can play in addressing the unmet income needs of individuals and families.

Dr. Parry's study, which focused on urban poverty and health equity in high-income countries, raised awareness of the significant impact that poverty can have on an individual's health and well-being. She elaborated the concept of poverty screening and income interventions, emphasizing the critical need for healthcare systems to take a more proactive approach in identifying and supporting those facing financial hardship. At the Q&A session, she also led a fruitful discussion with the audience about the feasibility of introducing such interventions in Hong Kong.

Dr. William Cho from the Department of Clinical Oncology of Queen Elizabeth Hospital was invited to lead a research seminar on “Translational Cancer Research and Precision Medicine” on 21 May 2024.

Apart from introducing precision medicine with a focus on the role of cancer biomarkers, Dr. Cho discussed drug repurposing, the use of Chinese medicine in cancer treatment, the future of precision medicine, and artificial intelligence.

On 16 April 2024, Professor Kelvin Wang, Assistant Dean (Professional Development in Health Sciences) of LKS Faculty of Medicine at The University of Hong Kong, was invited to deliver a research seminar and share his invaluable insights on "Optimising Effects of Intervention in Randomised Control Trials" with our academic colleagues.

Professor Wang's talk gave a thought-provoking overview of how to design randomised control trials that maximise implementation efficiency, intervention effects, and the chances of achieving impactful publication.

Prof. Yamamoto-Mitani, Head of the Graduate School of Health Science and Nursing of the University of Tokyo, was invited to be the speaker for a research seminar on Long-term Care and Community Integrated Care System held on 25 Oct 2023. Participants gained a better understanding on the UTokyo Nursing and Global Nursing Research Center and the major governmental approaches to care for older adults in Japan, and had a fruitful exchange with Prof. Yamamoto-Mitani on her research on quality assurance and continuous quality improvement of long-term care.

As part of their visit to the School, Dr. Mary Leamy and Prof. Ruth Harris, distinguished scholars from the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care (NMPC) of King's College London, delivered a research seminar on realist evaluation on 27 July 2023.

During the seminar, the guests introduced the postgraduate research programme offered by their Faculty and discussed potential collaboration with our School. They also shared their experience on realist evaluation and talked about the key principles of the realist approach.

On 8 May 2023, N&HS academics had the opportunity to learn about intervention in rehabilitation research and the differences between a clinical intervention and an implementation strategy from Prof. Linda Li, Professor, Harold Robinson Chair/Arthritis Society Chair in Arthritic Diseases, and Canada Research Chair in Patient-oriented Knowledge Translation of the Department of Physical Therapy of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia.

At the research seminar titled "The Use of Digital Technology to Support a Tailored Approach to Physical Activity in people with Arthritis", Prof. Li used her research project as an example to illustrate the challenges of implementation research, and explore the role of digital technology in supporting an active lifestyle.

Grant Writing: To Succeed or to Fail?

On 26 April 2023, Prof. Tai Hing Lam, Emeritus Professor and Honorary Clinical Professor of the School of Public Health at Hong Kong University, led a thought-provoking research seminar titled "Grant Writing: To Succeed or to Fail?".

As an experienced grant reviewer, Prof. Lam talked about common problems in grant applications, shedding light on pitfalls that often lead to failure. His insightful analysis provided participants with practical tips on how to enhance their grant writing skills.

By sharing key criteria for success in grant applications, Prof. Lam empowered academic colleagues to navigate the challenging landscape of securing research funding more effectively. The seminar served as a platform for colleagues to refine their grantsmanship skills and elevate their grant writing strategies.

Using examples from the UK and Singapore, Prof. Wang captivated the audience with his enlightening presentation on the use of the latest molecular techniques to diagnose and guide the treatment of complex diseases.

During the seminar, participants had the opportunity to delve into the considerations involved in executing and interpreting systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
