OUHK receives HK$15 million donation from three long-standing supporters for new campus development 6/11/2018

The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) received a total donation of HK$15 million from three members of its Sponsorship and Development Fund Committee (SDFC) earlier, namely Dr Eddy C Fong, Mr Matthew Wong Leung-pak and Dr Vincent Woo Wing-fai. Each patron has made a generous contribution of HK$5 million to support the development of OUHK’s new Jockey Club Institute of Healthcare. Speaking at today's cheque presentation ceremony, Council Chairman of the OUHK Mr Michael Wong Yick-kam expressed his deepest thanks to the three ardent supporters for their generous donation and long-standing support. He said that the timely gift given by Dr Eddy Fong, Mr Matthew Wong and Dr Vincent Woo has provided the University the necessary resources to fund the construction of the new Institute, which will be the cradle to nurture the much needed healthcare professionals for our society. President of the OUHK Prof. Yuk-Shan Wong also thanked the three SDFC members for their tremendous support in helping the University to enhance its teaching, learning and general development. "Over the years, we have benefited from many valuable suggestions and initiatives from our partners and friends. As the University approaches its 30th anniversary in 2019, we hope we will continue to gain the backing from the community so that we could bring about more positive changes to society through enhancement of our education," Prof. Wong said. Dr Eddy C Fong joined the Council of the OUHK in 2003 and was the Chairman of the Council from 2009 to 2016. He is now a member of the University Court and SDFC. Under his leadership, the University has scaled new heights with a significant surge in student population, and expansion of campus facilities. He has also donated repeatedly to the University in support of its many activities and development. Dr Fong was conferred Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa by the University in 2017. Mr Matthew Wong Leung-pak is the Chairman of Kwoon Chung Bus Holdings Limited. He has been serving at the University's SDFC since 2014 and has given huge support and invaluable advice to the University to help achieve its mission of "Education for all". In addition, Kwoon Chung Bus Holdings Limited has donated $3 million to the University for the development of the OUHK Jockey Club Campus in 2014. Mr Matthew Wong was awarded Honorary University Fellowship by the OUHK in 2014. Dr Vincent Woo Wing-fai is the Managing Director of Wing Sheung (Holdings) Limited. He is currently a member of the University Court and also the Co-Deputy Chairman of SDFC. Dr Woo was awarded Honorary University Fellowship and Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration by the OUHK in 2001 and 2010 respectively. As a steadfast supporter of the OUHK for decades, Dr Woo has made multiple generous donations to the University enabling it to enhance its infrastructure, boost its scholarship and bursary funds and strengthen its student support. In the face of challenges brought by an aging population and the growing pressure on healthcare services, the OUHK has embarked on a HK$850-milllion new campus development project on Sheung Shing Street, Ho Man Tin in 2017. The new OUHK Jockey Club Institute of Healthcare will be home to a suite of academic programmes that aims to nurture the next generation of healthcare professionals to address community needs. It is expected that about 2,800 students will benefit from the new learning facility every year upon its completion in 2020. In addition to the above-mentioned HK$15 million donation, the OUHK has also received a number of gifts and contributions from the community, as well as alumni, friends and members of the University. The OUHK is grateful to each and every donor for their staunch support and generosity, which is not only a recognition and affirmation of the University’s work, but also a driving force to propel it forward. As a self-financed institution without recurrent government funding, the OUHK has always relied on the community to further its development and to fulfill its unique role for Hong Kong’s higher education. Dr Vincent Woo Wing-fai is the Managing Director of Wing Sheung (Holdings) Limited. He is currently a member of the University Court and also the Co-Deputy Chairman of SDFC.
