Four HKMU nursing students, along with teammates from other local and overseas universities, won first place in the inaugural Orbis Future Vision Leaders Visionary Innovators Hackathon, a virtual 24-hour team competition that challenges participants to develop innovative solutions for global paediatric eye-health issues.

The hackathon, a highlight of the year-long Orbis Future Vision Leaders campaign based in Hong Kong and Canada, invited higher-education students in healthcare and other disciplines to champion Orbis's fight against global eye diseases. This year, the HKMU School of Nursing and Health Sciences has been invited to be a supporting organisation for the Hong Kong programme and has recruited 18 students to participate in the campaign.

To foster international exchange, the hackathon grouped more than 60 participants from six countries or regions into teams. They were given different prompts to solve specific issues within 24 hours, incorporating real-world constraints and fundraising considerations. HKMU students Cherie Fung, Dorothy Tam, Fang Huen-yan and Chloe Chiu contributed to the winning team, A+ Visionaries, which was asked to address vision impairment due to vitamin A deficiency.

Running from September to June, the Hong Kong version of Orbis Future Vision Leaders also features student-led eye health awareness activities, a darkness experience journey, volunteering opportunities at Orbis fundraising events, and lifetime access to Orbis's online learning platform, Cybersight. The HKMU Future Vision Leaders hosted activity booths on campus, which included braille experience games for fellow students.
