Introduction

The School of Education and Languages at Hong Kong Metropolitan University is proud to celebrate the university's 35th anniversary. In honor of this special moment, our school proposes organizing a one-day Applied Linguistics Symposium concentrated on the theme “Appliable Linguistics and Language Education.” This symposium will feature four keynote speakers, four talks, and a roundtable discussion. This event aims to bring together academics, researchers, educators, and students to discuss the latest developments, challenges, and opportunities in the field. Not only will the symposium celebrate the 35th anniversary of the university but it will also align with the university’s strategic plan, which emphasizes premier quality teaching, a rewarding and fulfilling learning experience, and research capacity enhancement.

Celebrating the 35th Anniversary

Organizing this symposium as part of the 35th-anniversary celebrations will showcase the university’s commitment to excellence in the field of language education. It will also serve as an opportunity to reflect the university’s achievements in these disciplines, as well as to foster collaboration and inspire future projects between HKMU and other institutes.

Premier Quality Teaching

The symposium has invited distinguished speakers who are experts in language education, providing a platform for knowledge sharing and professional development. By engaging with these experts, university faculty and educators from other institutions will be exposed to cutting-edge research and innovative teaching approaches, which can be incorporated into their own practices to enhance the quality of teaching at HKMU.

A Rewarding and Fulfilling Learning Experience

Students and researchers will benefit from attending the symposium by gaining insights into the latest trends and research findings in applied linguistics and language education. The event will offer an opportunity for attendees to network and engage with established scholars, fostering a sense of community and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. This unique learning experience will be invaluable for students and researchers in shaping their academic and professional trajectories.

Research Capacity Enhancement

The symposium will act as a catalyst for research capacity enhancement by promoting dialogue and collaboration between researchers in the field of applied linguistics. By sharing research findings, methodologies, and challenges, attendees can identify new research directions and potential partnerships. Furthermore, the symposium will help the university strengthen its reputation as a hub for innovative research in linguistics and language education, attracting potential funding and collaborative opportunities.

Objectives

  1. Showcase cutting-edge research and practices in applied linguistics and language education.
  2. Facilitate interdisciplinary dialogue among scholars, educators, and students.
  3. Foster collaborations that lead to innovative teaching and learning practices.
  4. Enhance the research capacity of faculty and students in language education.
