The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) held the naming ceremony of Siu Ming & Tsang Fung Kwan Nursing Skills Education Unit today (19 April) in recognition of the generous donation of over HK$8 million from its Court member Dr Gerald Siu Chi-shing. The donation was made in support of the construction of the OUHK Jockey Club Institute of Healthcare and the general development of the University.

The naming ceremony was officiated by Dr Gerald Siu Chi-shing, Mrs Siu Tsang Fung-kwan, OUHK Pro-chancellor Dr the Hon. Charles Lee Yeh-kwong, Council Chairman Mr Michael Wong Yick-kam, Deputy Council Chairman Ir Dr Conrad Wong Tin-cheung, President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing and Emeritus President Prof. Yuk-Shan Wong. Speaking at the ceremony, both Mr Wong and Prof. Lam expressed their heartfelt thanks to Dr Siu and his family for their staunch support to the University.

Mr Wong said, \u201cDr Siu has been making remarkable contributions to the University for many years. He has also served in the University Council for six years, providing strategic advice to the development of the OUHK. In addition, Dr Siu also introduces the development and achievements of the OUHK to his friends proactively, encouraging them to support the University. We are truly grateful for his dedication and kind support to us.\u201d

Prof. Lam said \u201cDr Siu has served in various capacities at the OUHK and he spares no effort in the University's development and fundraising work. The enthusiastic support and contributions from community leaders such as Dr Siu have made possible accomplishments and diversified development that OUHK has achieved today.”

Dr Gerald Siu cares about the development of education in Hong Kong and he is committed to the nurturing of talents for society. He expressed his gratitude to his parents at the ceremony for teaching him the important mission of \u201cusing resources derived from the community for the good of the community. In order to honour his parents for their love and care, Dr Siu deliberately named the unit after his parents as \u201cSiu Ming & Tsang Fung Kwan Nursing Skills Education Unit\u201d.

Dr Gerald Siu Chi-shing currently serves as the Co-Deputy Chairman of the University's Sponsorship & Development Fund Committee and he is also a Court member. He was conferred Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa by the OUHK in 2012 in recognition of his contribution to society. From 2010 till now, Dr Siu has donated over HK$18 million to the OUHK in support of various projects and initiatives, which have benefited countless students. In 2010, in recognition of the support from Dr Siu and his family members for the campus development project and other initiatives, the courtyard of the University's Ho Man Tin main campus was named as Siu Tsang Fung Kwan Square.

In the face of challenges brought by an aging population and the growing pressure on healthcare services, the OUHK embarked on a campus development project on Sheung Shing Street, Ho Man Tin in 2017 to establish the OUHK Jockey Club Institute of Healthcare. The new campus was officially opened in January this year, providing modern teaching and learning facilities as well as spacious amenities for all OUHK staff and students. The Unit named this time comprises two adjourning nursing laboratories located on the eighth floor of the Jockey Club Institute of Healthcare. Equipped with patient models and basic nursing equipment, the unit is set up as an authentic ward to create a clinical training environment for teaching students basic nursing skills. It is one of the most important facilities of the School of Nursing and Health Studies of the University.

The process of amending the ordinance governing the University has been started and formal approval from the Legislative Council will be sought. The new title shows the unique position of the University in metropolitan Hong Kong. It also signifies the University’s path of transformation from a modest distance education institution to a full-fledged university and reflects its unique characteristics and strategic focuses.
