AI Ethics and Governance – Emerging Consensus and Future Challenges

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has experienced rapid advancements and adoption in recent years, particularly after the emergence of Generative AI (GAI) around 2022. AI is transforming business and society at a scale previously unheard of.  At the same time, this transformation raises critical ethical concerns and governance challenges.  The new and powerful possibilities enabled by AI require novel approaches to ethical guidance, given their far-reaching potential impact across all walks of life, both positively and negatively.  AI ethics informs how AI may be governed (i.e., AI governance), which in turn should be an integral part of corporate governance for any responsible business.

Although there are diverse perspectives and approaches on AI ethics and the corresponding governance issues, some consensus is starting to emerge. This talk will review some of the emerging consensuses and significant areas of controversy, highlighting research directions that may help resolve them and advance both theory and practice in the field moving forward.

Responsible Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education:

A European Framework for Innovation, Disruption, and Governance

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming higher education—accelerating innovation while simultaneously disrupting long-established models of teaching, learning, assessment, and institutional governance. AI is enabling new forms of pedagogical innovation while simultaneously challenging established practices, institutional structures, and regulatory frameworks. This keynote presents a European perspective on Responsible AI in higher education, emphasizing the interplay between technological advancement, ethical accountability, and governance. It examines AI's dual capacity to enhance educational quality and efficiency, while also introducing disruptive effects related to academic integrity, equity, transparency, and trust. Drawing on the EU-funded project EUonAIR, the presentation highlights interim results from ongoing research and pilot initiatives, including emerging governance models, implementation guidelines, and interim project results from pilot initiatives across institutions. The keynote concludes by proposing strategic recommendations for aligning AI-enabled innovation with ethical principles, ensuring that adoption is both socially sustainable and educationally meaningful in an era of rapid technological change.
