He was the former President of the Association of Chinese and Comparative Literature (ACCL). His research projects include contemporary Chinese science fiction, the discourse of youth and the Bildungsroman in late Qing and Republican China, and the life and work of Eileen Chang. His research project focuses on the posthuman and the \u201cNeo-Baroque\u201d in contemporary Sinophone fiction. He is the author of several monographs, including Fear of Seeing: A Poetics of Chinese Science Fiction, Young China: National Rejuvenation and the Bildungsroman, 1900-1959, and The Sorrows of a
