The seminar explored the enduring narrative of the White Snake legend and its multifaceted adaptations within the digital age, focusing on its reimagining across various media platforms.<\/p>\n\n

It began by examining a collaborative animated advertisement by a yoghurt brand and the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, questioning the altered character roles and narrative elements of the White Snake. The presentation contrasted this modern interpretation with versions spanning the Tang, Ming, Qing, and Republican eras, highlighting Bai Suzhen's evolving image from villain to lover and, eventually, a celestial being.<\/p>\n\n

The discussion then moved to different TV drama series which incorporate the White Snake story. The seminar emphasized the concept of narrative retelling, drawing on theories of intertextuality, parody, and cultural continuity. These retellings broaden the audience, create dialogue between old and new, and defamiliarize the classic story, extending its lifespan.<\/p>\n\n

At the end of the seminar, Ms Tsang highlighted the trend of reinterpreting ancient Chinese myths and legends for contemporary audiences, spanning platforms like YouTube and Bilibili, demonstrating the legend's pervasive influence.
