Biography

Dr Victor Law is currently a Lecturer at the Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU). He is also a Research Fellow of the Public and Social Policy Research Centre at HKMU. He specialises in Hong Kong Politics, Contemporary China, Law (English and Hong Kong), Comparative Politics, International Relations, and Research Methodology.
Dr Law was educated in the UK. He received his BA (Hons) in Politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London; MSc in Comparative Politics (Research) from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), University of London; and PhD in Politics and International Studies from SOAS, University of London. Recently, he also received his Graduate Diploma in English and Hong Kong Law (legal qualification recognised in Hong Kong and England & Wales) from the Manchester Law School (UK).  Dr Law was the recipient of numerous awards and prizes, including the Mary Laslett Prize for Politics (2007); Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research Scholarship (SOAS) (2013); and Goodenough PhD Scholarship (2014-2017).
Dr Law’s academic interests are diverse. They span across the disciplines of comparative politics, international relations, political sociology, political economy, environmental politics, and public law. His regional specialism is Greater China (including mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan). He presented and chaired in numerous conferences in the UK and Hong Kong in the aforementioned areas. Dr Law is also interested in research methodology. He participated and presented in various workshops (especially on interpretive methodologies) organised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), UK. He was also selected to represent SOAS in the annual Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research (IQMR) at Syracuse University, New York. On the merits of his expertise and research areas, Dr. Law was elected a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland (FRAS) in 2014.
Prior to joining HKMU, Dr Law was the Course Coordinator (Undergraduate Research) and Teaching Associate (Contemporary China) in the Global China Studies programme at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He was also a Lecturer (part-time), Instructor (part-time) (Quantitative Methods), and Research Supervisor (part-time) for the BA (Hons) in Social Sciences at HKU SPACE (joint programme with the Edinburgh Napier University, UK); and a Lecturer (part-time) and External Consultant (Civic Education Course) at Lingnan University. Dr Law was also the recipient of the ‘Best Teaching Portfolio Award’ at Lingnan University, HK.
Dr Law is also experienced in tertiary education administration. Aside from managing and coordinating different university courses, he also sat in one of the governing committees (the Academic Committee) of a postgraduate institution- Goodenough College- in London from 2012 to 2017. He also sat in the same institution’s ‘Consent Working Group’ and participated in devising a new sexual harassment policy for them in 2018. In addition to those, Dr Law was also a member of the BSocSc Board of Examiners at Lingnan University, and a staff representative at Lingnan’s Staff-Student Consultation Committee for Core Curriculum and General Education. Recently, Dr Law also sat in the Academic Committee for BA (Hons) Social Science at HKU SPACE and participated in interpreting and implementing the programme accreditation feedbacks from the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ).
