Throughout a year of teaching and research achievements,\nHKMU has not neglected the importance of enhancing and\nexpanding its physical infrastructure. In the face of space\nrestrictions that apparently impose physical limits on its\nambitions, the University has been thinking \u201coutside the box\u201d to\noptimise available space, renovate and update wherever\npossible, while also locating further space for expansion in the\nfuture.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Optimising precious campus space\n<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Located on a relatively small campus site in a densely\npopulated area, HKMU is constantly looking to\nmaximise the space it has available for teaching,\nlearning and student development. During the year\nwe completed the relocation of some administrative\noffices off-campus to free up some office space for\nteaching and learning purposes. We are also searching\nfor an off-campus warehouse for large-scale storage\npurposes. Once space had been cleared on campus,\nthe remaining administrative and school offices were\nconsolidated and renovated, and the extra space\nalso allowed for the construction of new teaching\nlaboratories, including a Digital Art Laboratory and\na Medical Science Laboratory. Other renovation\nwork transformed miscellaneous space into a\nmulti-functional gallery and exhibition area for\ndisplaying students' creative work or hosting student\nactivities. The Stanley Ho Library on the Main Campus\nunderwent significant refurbishment, introducing\nnew discussion rooms, furniture and facilities to cater\nto students' diverse individual and collaborative\nlearning needs. Alterations have also been made\nto the Open Plaza on the Jockey Club Campus, to\naccommodate participants in the weekly flag-raising\nceremony.\n<\/p>

Many of our students, especially those coming from\noutside Hong Kong, have a need for safe, secure and\naffordable accommodation while they are undertaking\ntheir studies. We have been exploring a number of\noptions to expand the amount of student accommodation\nwe can offer, this year identifying properties that have\nthe potential to be used as student hostels.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Planned new campus to promote health and wellness for all<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Although HKMU occupies a tight space in a very built-up\narea, it is fortunate to have access to a slope site on\nSheung Shing Street with the potential for further\ncampus development. During the year, a planning\nconsultant commissioned by HKMU developed a\nconceptual design and various environmental and\ntraffic assessments relating to the site, and formal\nsubmission to the Town Planning Board is planned for\nthe fourth quarter of 2023. The new development has\nbeen planned under the theme \u201cA Hub for Community\nHealth and Wellness\u201d. As its name indicates, the\ncampus will be designed to support HKMU education\nprogrammes, research, and activities promoting health\nand wellness for the entire community. Planned\nstate-of-the-art facilities include a gerontechnology\nlaboratory, an integrated health clinic and an\ninterdisciplinary research centre.\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Meanwhile, at our Kwai Hing Campus, we have been\nadding new facilities and making other enhancements.\nA new Early Child Education STEAM Room has been\nopened there, while enhancements have been made to the Smart Hotel Room. \n<\/p>\n

While developing and expanding its campus, the\nUniversity has always paid close attention to green\nliving and sustainability themes. On the back of its\nwork to extend coverage of its campus sustainability\ninitiatives and expand its recycling efforts, HKMU won\nseveral green campus recognitions in the last year.\nAmong them were the Hong Kong Green Organisation\nCertification, led by the Environmental Campaign\nCommittee, and Certificates of Appreciation from the\nNatural Christmas Trees Recycling Programme and\nthe Peach Blossom Trees Recycling Programme by the\nEnvironmental and Ecology Bureau. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Expanding the library collection beyond physical boundaries\n<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The HKMU library collection continued to grow in the\nacademic year 2022\u201323, expanding to over 6.3 million\nbooks and dissertations, more than 206,000 journal\nsubscriptions, some 288,100 multimedia items and over\n460 databases. A striking feature of this expansion is\nthe substantial proportion of the collection now\navailable in electronic format \u2014 over 97% of the books\nand dissertations, 99% of the journals and 92% of the\nmultimedia items. This expansion of the digital collection,\ntogether with the launch of the new cloud-based\nlibrary system and resources discovery platform in July\n2023, is a sign of our unwavering commitment to go\nbeyond physical boundaries in providing an\nexceptional range of teaching, learning, and research\nresources to our faculty and students.\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
