Internationalisation through
\nAcademic Reform<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

HKMU embarked on an Academic Reform exercise in\n2021. This is a multi-year transition process that will\nsystematically move the University's academic credit\nsystem across all its programmes from a five-credit to\na three-credit-unit framework over five years, from\n2023 onwards. The move carries significant implications\nfor HKMU's standing locally and globally, especially\nwith regard to the compatibility and comparability of\nits programmes with those of most universities\nworldwide. For instance, the shift to three units will\nfacilitate credit transfers and exemptions between\nuniversities, and generally boost student mobility\nand internationalisation. In addition, the Academic\nReform involves reviewing and updating HKMU's\ncurriculum content and giving students more\nopportunities to engage in learning opportunities\nbeyond their main fields of study. Embedded in the\ncurriculum reform are new Core Values modules that\nwill act as bedrock learning designed to cultivate\nstudents' moral standards and help them become\ngood citizens, based on the University's four core\nvalues of integrity, fairness, perseverance and\ninnovation.\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

New programmes to address new needs<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

HKMU has continued to design and offer new degree\nprogrammes with an eye on expanding its educational\nprofile into new fields of demand, drawing on funding\nof HK$73.9 million received from the Education Bureau's\nEnhancement and Start-up Grant Scheme for\nSelf-financing Post-secondary Education. Part of this\namount has been used to set up a new Bachelor of\nArts with Honours in New Music and Interactive\nEntertainment, the first programme in Hong Kong for\nthe production of hybrid interactive entertainment\nwith an emphasis on new music and related genres.\nThe remaining amount has gone towards creating a\nnew Bachelor of Science with Honours in Construction\nManagement and Quantity Surveying. This degree\nprogramme has been specifically designed to address\nthe expected manpower shortage in Hong Kong in\ncoming years once several major infrastructure\nprojects (such as the Northern Metropolis and Lantau\nTomorrow) get underway. Both programmes have\nfully incorporated AI elements into their curriculum\nand assessment models, ensuring that graduates will\nstay abreast of the latest industry trends.\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

New state-of-the-art facilities<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The University officially opened several exceptional\nnew teaching, learning and research facilities in the\npast year. Our new Physiotherapy Centre, opened in\nDecember 2022, has quickly established itself as an\nessential provider of professional physiotherapy\ntreatment for all, while also offering clinical learning\nopportunities for our physiotherapy students.\nElsewhere, we opened a state-of-the-art Digital Art\nLaboratory, equipped with 360\u00b0 and 270\u00b0 immersive\nCAVE systems, to train students in imaging technology,\nvisual programming and other digital arts, and for\nresearch visualisation purposes. To support our new\nBachelor of Science with Honours in Medical Laboratory\nScience programme launched in 2023\u201324, the University\nalso unveiled a new 7,000 square-foot Medical Science\nLaboratory covering all five disciplines of the programme. That comes on top of the new Psychology and\nBehavioural Science Laboratory, opened in October\n2022, which offers advanced facilities for behavioural,\nVR and neuroscience experiments, and for counselling\ntraining.\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Programme accreditations from professional industry\nbodies represent important recognitions of the\nquality of HKMU's academic standards. This year, the\nHong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) fully\naccredited three of HKMU's Bachelor of Engineering\nwith Honours programmes (namely Building Services\nEngineering and Sustainable Development, Civil and\nEnvironmental Engineering, and Electronic and\nComputer Engineering) for five years. Elsewhere,\nfollowing an accreditation visit by the Chartered\nInstitute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong\n(CILTHK), the Institute granted degree-holders of our\nBachelor of Business Administration with Honours in\nGlobal Marketing and Supply Chain Management full\nexemption from its Professional Qualifying\nExamination, a pathway to Chartered Membership of\nCILTHK, for a period of five years.\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

HKMU has always prided itself on its careful decisionmaking\nprotocols and performance assessment\nprocedures. This year, it took standards in these areas\nto a new level by setting up the Office of Planning and\nAnalysis, whose team is responsible for overseeing\na rich database relating to various University operations. The Office is drawing on this database to develop a\nrange of teaching and administrative support models\nfor staff and students, along with sophisticated\nperformance indicators and performance measures\nto evaluate how well the University is operating.\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Attracting and retaining the best teaching and\nresearch talent is essential for HKMU to achieve its\ngrowth aspirations and consolidate its reputation for\nacademic excellence. With this in mind, the University\nlaunched an in-depth Pay Level Review in the year,\ncoming up with proposed changes to make working\nat HKMU more attractive to staff than ever. The first\nphase of the review focused on full-time higher-level\nclinical staff, an area in which the University has\nparticularly pressing needs. Changes to the pay scales,\npay ranges and allowances of full-time clinical staff in\nBands 4 and 5 were approved in April 2023, making\nfor more attractive employment packages all round.\nPhase 2 of the review, for all other full-time staff,\nbegan in January 2023 and is currently underway.\nRecommendations are expected to be submitted to\nthe Council by the end of the year, and once approved\nwill go into effect in 2024.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
