As I reflect on my journey as the Chairman of the\nCouncil over the past year, I am filled with satisfaction\nat the progress we have made towards our objectives.<\/p>\n

One major move this year was to establish a new\nIndustry Partnerships and Student Development\nCommittee, in a centralised effort to expand the\nworking partnerships between HKMU and industry.\nThe Committee has made swift and effective strides.\nIt has already engaged with numerous industry\nleaders, including the Hong Kong Science and\nTechnology Parks Corporation, Hong Yip Holdings\nand FSE Lifestyle, to bring our students work\nplacement opportunities. It has also leveraged\nindustry resources to help develop an entrepreneurial\nculture among HKMU students, for instance by\nrecruiting organisations such as Cyberport, Education\nfor Good and HKAI Lab as Strategic Partners of our\nMetroChallenge 2023. Beyond that, it is finding ways\nto match the needs and strengths of our individual\nSchools with industry, exploring win-win partnerships\nthat will have a positive impact on our society.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Promoting an entrepreneurial spirit among our\nstudents is also something we are doing by tapping\ninto our internal resources. In March this year, the\nUniversity Council boldly approved the setting up of\nthe HKMU Startup Fund, an initial HK$50 million fund\ndesigned to support students, staff and alumni\nlooking to turn their innovative ideas into commercial\nsolutions. With many senior executives and\nentrepreneurs on the Council, we are of course\nmindful of the risks associated with startups. I am\ntherefore particularly grateful to those experienced\nCouncil members who have stepped onto the\nmanagement team of the fund. Their counsel will\nensure that the money is directed into viable\nbusinesses that will both benefit society and raise our\nreputation as a change-maker.<\/p>\n

Our efforts to make our society a better place for\neveryone extend beyond entrepreneurship. This year,\nwe signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the\nCorrectional Services Department that is stepping up\nour long-term commitment to the rehabilitation of\noffenders. We have already conferred over 200\ndegrees on graduates in custody over the years,\nbut under this MOU we can now offer a more\ncomprehensive support package for inmate students,\nincluding not only financial assistance but also new\ncredit transfer and programme articulation\narrangements enabling younger inmates to continue\nwith their tertiary education. This has involved\nenhancing our Bursary Scheme for inmates, more\nthan doubling the amount available since the\n2020\u201221 academic year to over HK$1.75 million, and\nnearly doubling the number of inmates benefiting\nfrom the scheme (from 138 to 260) in that time.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Our individual Schools are also making contributions\nto the betterment of society in multiple ways,\nespecially through the development of new\nprogrammes. Following its launch of a bachelor's\ndegree in Medical Laboratory Science this academic\nyear, the School of Science and Technology has\nutilised funding from the Government's Enhancement\nand Start-up Grant Scheme for Self-financing\nPost-secondary Education to offer a Bachelor of\nScience with Honours in Construction Management\nand Quantity Surveying. The School of Arts and Social\nSciences has drawn on the same support scheme to\nlaunch a Bachelor of Arts in New Music and\nInteractive Entertainment. Meanwhile, the Lee Shau\nKee School of Business and Administration has\nconcluded an agreement with the Institute of Dining\nProfessionals that covers the development of a\nMaster of Professional Management in Food and\nBeverage Business. In terms of community outreach,\nthe Li Ka Shing School of Professional and Continuing\nEducation (LiPACE) is rolling out a project called the\n\u201cHKMU Parenting Hub\u201d to promote parent education\nin the community, while the School of Nursing and\nHealth Studies has obtained funding from The Hong\nKong Jockey Club Charities Trust to embark on a\nfamily-based project to promote the mental wellbeing\nof expectant mothers and their support networks.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Given these multifaceted developments, we see a clear\nneed to further expand our physical premises for\neducation and research. We are currently rallying\nsupport for a proposal to develop a slope site on\nSheung Shing Street into a new campus, to be designated\na \u201cHub for Community Health and Wellness\u201d. Healthcare\nis a major topic of community concern in light of our\nageing population and increasing emphasis on\nindividual and community wellbeing. With this new\ncampus hub, we look forward to playing an even\ngreater part in this area by integrating the expertise\nand resources of our diverse disciplines right across\nthe field. I invite everyone associated with HKMU to\nsupport this and other exciting new directions aimed\nat creating positive social impacts and affirming our\nposition as a community-focused University.<\/p>\n

As this summary of recent initiatives makes clear, our\nUniversity is moving quickly and effectively to turn our\nmultifaceted vision into a practical reality. Such major\nsteps forward would be impossible without ambitious,\ncommitted and highly competent people to drive\nthem. We are fortunate that HKMU is populated by\njust such people. My special thanks go out to the\nUniversity Council and management for their highly\nprofessional but always personal commitment to the\nenhancement of this institution.
