The pandemic changed much about how we as a\nUniversity operate, forcing us to reflect on the future\nand rethink our strategies for the years ahead. At the\nsame time we saw another global development that\naffected our entire society, including the education\nsector. That was the arrival of ChatGPT-4, a\nbreakthrough signalling the onset of an artificial\nintelligence (AI) revolution. It was against this\nbackdrop that we developed our latest five-year\nStrategic Plan, for 2024 to 2028, in which we have set\nout strategies for extending our horizons in six major\nareas. The plan recognises that we must increase the\nimpact we make while staying aware of, and\naddressing, the unique challenges of our times.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Our essential work is to cultivate talent, and to do this\nwe are determined to offer students a well-rounded\neducation that will launch them on a smooth and\nprosperous life journey. \u201cMetro FAITH\u201d is an\nexperiential learning model developed by the\nUniversity to help students build a positive mindset,\nstrengthen their resilience, and establish a personal\nfaith in their ability to face adversity in life. As its\norganising principle, the \u201cMetro FAITH\u201d Scheme takes\nessential principles from the positive psychology of\nthe West and educational concepts of the\nConfucianism of the East, integrated and\nreengineered so that they match with modern social\nand technological realities. The letters of the acronym\nFAITH stand for five vital qualities that the University\nstrives to instil into its students:<\/p>\n

Certainly, as a university determined to be at the\ncutting-edge of human endeavour, we want to be an\nintegral part of the upcoming AI revolution and\nensure that our students are AI literate. We have been\nrunning workshops, seminars and training for staff\nand students in recent months to help them get to\ngrips with this emerging technology. Looking ahead,\nall our new programmes are being designed with AI as\nan integral component. For instance, our new\nBachelor of Arts with Honours in New Music and\nInteractive Entertainment and Bachelor of Science\nwith Honours in Construction Management and\nQuantity Surveying are both AI-enriched, and we will\nbe revisiting all our existing programmes to\nincorporate AI elements in them.<\/p>\n

As AI comes to play an ever more important part of\nlearning and living, we plan to further step up our\nintegration of AI into every facet of the University's\noperations. This is based on our belief that, used\nwisely, AI holds huge potential for learning and\nteaching in areas such as the collection of information,\ndata analysis, organisation of figures and translation of\narticles. Towards the end of the academic year we\nlaunched our own ChatGPT portal, first for staff and\nthen for students. We are currently developing a\nchatbot powered by ChatGPT to answer questions\nabout our services, beginning with the Library, Online\nLearning Environment and IT Service Desk.<\/p>\n

\u201cImpact\u201d is a term that is important to me personally,\nand to this University. One of the best ways we can\nhave an impact is by carrying out relevant,\nsocially-useful research and knowledge creation. This\nbelief has driven our efforts in the past year to\nencourage and support impact research; efforts, I am\npleased to say, that have begun quickly to pay off in\nterms of attracting external funding. A few statistics\nrelating to our results in the 2023\u201324 Competitive\nResearch Funding Schemes for the Local Self-financing\nDegree Sector will make this clear.

\n\u25aa\ufe0f Total funding: HKMU ranked first, with our\nproposals receiving total funding of HK$29.1\nmillion, the highest of all institutions.
\n\u25aa\ufe0f Faculty Development Scheme (FDS): HKMU ranked\nfirst in total FDS funding (HK$22.1 million) and total\nnumber of funded FDS proposals (25). The latter is\n78% higher than the last year's results. One FDS\nproposal received the largest grant (HK$2,033,250)\nof all funded FDS proposals.
\u25aa\ufe0f Research Infrastructure Grant (RIG): HKMU's proposal\nreceived the largest funding (HK$6,515,000) of\nall funded RIG proposals. This is the seventh time\nthe University has received RIG funding from the\nResearch Grants Council, the best result among all\ninstitutions.
\n\u25aa\ufe0f Overall: HKMU's total funding, total FDS funding\nand number of funded FDS proposals were all\nrecord highs for us in all rounds of applications.<\/p>\n\n

The projects our researchers are involved with tend to have highly practical social, commercial and educational benefits, which typically require a knowledge transfer process to actualise them into practical outcomes. This is why we have set up a new Patent Committee, which has already begun filing patents on behalf of the University.<\/p>\n

This year we have already seen some exciting\noutcomes of knowledge transfer. One is the \u201cVR\nDriving School\u201d project, a brilliant idea involving\nutilising the possibilities of virtual reality (VR) and\naugmented reality (AR) to simulate driving conditions\nfor learners that may be seldom experienced in real\nlife. Inspired by a student project, this initiative\nproceeded through private, public and internal\nfunding that epitomises the knowledge transfer\nprocess. It brought together staff, students,\nUniversity networks, government support and\nindustry participation to turn a bright idea into a\nworking system benefiting real Hong Kong learners.This year we have already seen some exciting\noutcomes of knowledge transfer. Similar examples can be seen in two other activities\nwe have been involved with recently. The School of\nNursing and Health Studies' \u201cJockey Club 'BaMa Chill\nClub' Perinatal Support Project\u201d has drawn on over\nHK$20 million in funding from The Hong Kong Jockey\nClub Charities Trust to develop a mental health\nprogramme for new parents and their support\nnetworks. It is a fine example of clinical knowledge\nand expertise being transferred into the community.\nMeanwhile, our University's much-used Open English\ntextbook series for primary and secondary school\nstudents is being given a major upgrade and\nmodernisation. With the help of a HK$23.1 million\ngrant from the Education Bureau's Quality Education\nFund, the series will be turned into an interactive\nmobile app.<\/p>\n

It is immensely gratifying to see the work of our\ntalented academic staff, researchers and students\nattracting funding, undergoing rigorous review, and\neventually generating meaningful, impactful\noutcomes that are making people's lives better. This is\nsurely at the heart of what every university aspires to,\nand I am proud of the efforts of HKMU in this respect\nover the past year. As always, we will not remain\nstatic. As society changes and as new needs develop,\nHKMU will move forward alongside, identifying new\nneeds and providing new talents and entrepreneurs,\nnew skilled workers, and new research: in short,\nhaving an impact in creating a better society.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
