Regulations for the Higher Diploma in Nursing

 

1. General
1.1
These regulations are made under paragraphs 1 to 4 of the Regulations for the Award of Sub-degree Qualifications (Sub-degrees).
1.2
In these regulations definitions shall apply as in the Regulations for the Award of Sub-degree Qualifications and in the Interpretation Section of the Academic Rules and Regulations.
 
2. Entry Requirements
2.1
To enter the Higher Diploma in Nursing programme, a student must:
  2.1.1   be recognized by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong as an Enrolled Nurse (General); and
  2.1.2   be currently working as an Enrolled Nurse (General) in a health care setting in Hong Kong; and
  2.1.3 (a)

have at least three years’ post qualification [Enrolled Nurse (General)] clinical experience

      OR  
    (b)

have a minimum of one year’s post qualification [Enrolled Nurse (General)] clinical experience and have obtained the following qualifications#:

      (i)

A minimum of five subjects in the HKCEE including :-

        1.

Chinese Language at Grade D (or Level 3) or above;

        2.

Any one science subject from the following at Grade E or above:
(Biology, Chemistry, Human Biology, Mathematics, Physics);

        3. Any two other subjects at Grade E (or Level 2 for English Language) or above:
Accommodation and Catering Services, Additional Mathematics, Biology, Buddhists Studies, Chemistry, Chinese History, Chinese Literature, Commerce, Computer and Information Technology, Design and Technology, Design and Technology (Alternative Syllabus), Economics, Economics & Public Affairs, Electronics and Electricity, English Language (Syllabus A or B), English Literature, French, Geography, Government and Public Affairs, Graphical Communication, History, Home Economics  (Food Home and Family), Human Biology, Integrated Humanities, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Physics, Principles of Accounts, Putonghua, Religious Studies, Science and Technology, Social Studies, Visual Arts, Word Processing and Business Communication (English)

 

        4. Any one other subject at Grade E or above; and

 

      (ii)

Any one of the subjects listed in 1 to 3 must be at Grade C (or Level 3 for English Language or Chinese Language) or above.

these qualifications are stipulated by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong
         
      OR

 

    (c)

have a minimum of three months’ post qualification [Enrolled Nurse (General)] clinical experience and have obtained the following:

      (i)

Advanced Level Examination (A.L.) with Grade E or above in two subjects, or A.L. with Grade E or above in one subject and Advanced Supplementary Level Examination (A.S.) with Grade E or above in two subjects (except Use of English and Chinese Language & Culture); and

      (ii)

Advanced Supplementary Level Examination (A.S.) with Grade E or above in Use of English and Chinese Language & Culture.

       

OR

      (iii)

have a minimum of 5 subjects in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE), or equivalent, or any recognised qualification above. The 5 compulsory subjects required are:

        1.

4 Core Subjects, with English Language and Chinese Language at Level 3 or above, and Mathematics and Liberal Studies at Level 2 or above; and

        2.

1 Elective Subject from Category A* – New Senior Secondary Subjects at Level 2 or above.

         

* Please refer to the Appendix for Category A subjects

2.2
To enter the Higher Diploma in Nursing programme through pathway 1, a student shall:
  2.2.1 possess an OUHK Higher Diploma in Nursing Studies (General Health Care) qualification; and
  2.2.2 have a minimum of three months’ post qualification Enrolled Nurse (General) clinical experience.
 
3. Higher Diploma in Nursing (HDN)
3.1
To be eligible for the award of the Higher Diploma in Nursing, a student shall:
 
3.1.1
comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
 
3.1.2
comply with the Regulations for the Award of Sub-degree Qualifications (Sub-degrees); and
  3.1.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
 
3.1.4
obtain at least 90 credits in courses prescribed by the regulations including at least 10 credits from Higher level courses.
3.2
For the Higher Diploma in Nursing, the University has prescribed that a student must:
 
3.2.1
successfully complete a total of 90 credits from the courses in Table 1.
 
4. Higher Diploma in Nursing (HDN) (through Pathway 1)
4.1
To be eligible for the award of the Higher Diploma in Nursing, a student who entered the programme through pathway 1 shall:
 
4.1.1
comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
 
4.1.2
comply with the Regulations for the Award of Sub-degree Qualifications (Sub-degrees); and
  4.1.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
 
4.1.4
obtain at least 85 credits in courses prescribed by the regulations including at least 10 credits from Higher level courses.
4.2
For the Higher Diploma in Nursing, the University has prescribed that a student who entered the programme through Pathway 1 must:
 
4.2.1
successfully complete a total of 85 credits from the courses (except NURS N208C) in Table 1.
