Regulations for the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) and Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours (Effective from October 2012)

1. General
1.1 These regulations are made under paragraphs 1 to 4 of the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees.
1.2 In these regulations definitions shall apply as in the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees and in the Interpretation Section of the Academic Rules and Regulations.
   
2. Bachelor of Language Studies (English)
Pathway 1 (LGSTE-12)
2.1 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) — Pathway 1, a student shall:
  2.1.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  2.1.2 comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and
  2.1.3 obtain at least 120 credits of which no more than 40 credits shall be obtained at Foundation level, as prescribed by the regulations.
2.2 For the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) — Pathway 1, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  2.2.1 successfully complete 60 credits from courses labelled C7 in Table 1; and
  2.2.2 successfully complete 20 credits from courses labelled E7a in Table 1; and
  2.2.3 successfully complete 40 additional credits from any Foundation, Middle or Higher level courses offered by the University, of which no more than 25 credits are at Foundation level.
   
Pathway 2 (LSE2-12)
2.3 To enter the Bachelor of Language Studies (English) programme — Pathway 2, a student shall normally possess a recognized associate degree, or equivalent, in English studies or a related area.
2.4 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) — Pathway 2, a student shall:
  2.4.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  2.4.2 comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and
  2.4.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  2.4.4 obtain at least 40 credits of courses as prescribed by the regulations.
2.5 For the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) — Pathway 2, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  2.5.1 successfully complete 25 credits from courses labelled C8 in Table 1; and
  2.5.2 successfully complete 5 credits from courses labelled E8a in Table 1; and
  2.5.3 successfully complete at least 10 credits from courses labelled E8b in Table 1.
Pathway 3 (LSE3-12)
2.6 To enter the Bachelor of Language Studies (English) programme — Pathway 3, a student shall normally possess a recognized associate degree, or equivalent, in an area not related to English studies.
2.7 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) — Pathway 3, a student shall:
  2.7.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  2.7.2 comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and
  2.7.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  2.7.4 obtain at least 60 credits of courses as prescribed by the regulations.
2.8 For the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) — Pathway 3, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  2.8.1 successfully complete 35 credits from courses labelled C9 in Table 1; and
  2.8.2 successfully complete 5 credits from courses labelled E9a in Table 1; and
  2.8.3 successfully complete 20 credits from courses labelled E9b in Table 1.
   
3. Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours
Pathway 1 (LSEH1-12)
3.1 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours — Pathway 1, a student shall:
  3.1.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  3.1.2 comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and
  3.1.3 obtain at least 160 credits of which no more than 40 credits shall be obtained at Foundation level, as prescribed by the regulations.
3.2 For the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours — Pathway 1, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  3.2.1 successfully complete 60 credits from courses labelled C10 in Table 1; and
  3.2.2 successfully complete 60 credits from courses labelled E10 in Table 1; and
  3.2.3 successfully complete 40 additional credits from any Foundation, Middle or Higher level courses offered by the University, of which no more than 25 credits are at Foundation level.
Pathway 2 (LSEH2-12)
3.3 To enter the Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours programme — Pathway 2, a student shall normally possess a recognized associate degree, or equivalent, in English studies or a related area.
3.4 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours — Pathway 2, a student shall:
  3.4.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  3.4.2 comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and
  3.4.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  3.4.4 obtain at least 80 credits of courses as prescribed by the regulations.
3.5 For the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours — Pathway 2, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  3.5.1 successfully complete 45 credits from the compulsory courses labelled C11 in Table 1; and
  3.5.2 successfully complete 5 credits from courses labelled E11a in Table 1; and
  3.5.3 successfully complete 30 credits from the English language studies elective courses labelled E11b in Table 1.
Pathway 3 (LSEH3-12)
3.6 To enter the Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours programme — Pathway 3, a student shall normally possess a recognized associate degree, or equivalent, in an area not related to English studies.
3.7 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours — Pathway 3, a student shall:
  3.7.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  3.7.2 comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and
  3.7.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  3.7.4 obtain at least 100 credits of courses as prescribed by the regulations.
3.8 For the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours — Pathway 3, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  3.8.1 successfully complete 95 credits from the compulsory courses labelled C12 in Table 1; and
  3.8.2 successfully complete 5 credits from courses labelled E12 in Table 1.
4. Each degree with Honours shall be conferred with a classification of First Class, Second Class (Upper Division), Second Class (Lower Division) or Third Class save that exceptionally a degree may be conferred without classification.
5. Subject to the requirements of the relevant programme of study, each person on whom an Honours degree is to be conferred shall be assigned to a classification determined by the University according to its regulations.
6. For the calculation of scores for classification purposes in the degree of Bachelor of Language Studies (English) with Honours, the University has deemed that “Group (a)” shall consist of the best 40 credits in courses at Higher level listed in Table 1, and that “Group (b)” shall consist of the best 40 credits in courses at Higher or Middle level listed in Table 1, where such credits are not taken into account in “Group (a)”. Further, that “X” shall equal two, that is “Group (a)” shall be weighted at twice the value of “Group (b)”. Notes:

  1. ENGL E100 has been replaced by ENGL E110 and ENGL E120. If students have successfully completed ENGL E100, they are deemed to have satisfied the requirements of ENGL E110 and ENGL E120.
     
  2. Courses form excluded combinations with other courses. Only one of the courses of the excluded combinations can count towards an OUHK award. Students should refer to the list of excluded combinations for details.
     
  3. If students have successfully completed IT L150, they are deemed to have satisfied the requirements of IT E150.
     
  4. ENGL E371 has been replaced by ENGL E372. If students have successfully completed ENGL E371, they are deemed to have satisfied the requirements of ENGL E372.
