Aims

This course intends to introduce the scientific study of developmental psychology and establish a solid foundation for further exploration in developmental psychology. It broadly covers the major concepts, theories, theoretical approaches and empirical findings in the field. It also demonstrates the applications of developmental psychology across the human lifespan.

  • Research approaches and methods for development
  • Biological basis of development
  • Conception and prenatal development
  • Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development in infancy
  • Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development in early childhood
  • Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development in middle and late childhood
  • Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development in adolescence
  • Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development in early adulthood
  • Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development in middle adulthood
  • Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development in late adulthood

Learning support

There will be ten face-to-face tutorials and two day schools.

Assessment

Students' performance is assessed by continuous assessment, taking up 100% of the course grade. There are four assignments for the course. The best three scores out of the four will count towards the course grade.

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
