Aims

This course aims to enhance students' ability to comprehend management from a strategic perspective. It equips students with fundamental theoretical knowledge as well as the practical skills in strategy and management that practitioners need to make quality decisions for developing a sustainable competitive advantage for their organisations.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to strategy and strategic management
  • External environmental analysis
  • Internal environmental analysis
  • Competitive advantage and levels of strategy
  • Strategy in the global environment
  • Innovation and entrepreneurial strategies
  • Corporate governance issues: stakeholders, business ethics and corporate social responsibility
  • Strategic leadership
  • Organising and controlling
  • Managing strategic change

Contact hours

A total of 60 contact hours across one term.

Assessment

The continuous assessment portion of the course accounts for 40% of the total course score, which consists of individual and group written assignments (22.5%), one oral presentation (7.5%) and class participation (10%). The final examination accounts for the remaining 60% of total course score. Students are required to submit written assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
