Aims

This course aims to:

  1. Raise students' awareness of frailty as a preventable and reversible condition;
  2. Equip students with the knowledge and skills related to frailty screening, assessment, and management;
  3. Enable students to critically evaluate evidence-based interventions for the frail population.

Contents

  1. What is frailty?
  2. Frailty screening and assessment; levels of frailty state and prevalence of frailty in community and health care settings
  3. Understanding ageing from genomic sciences perspective
  4. Primary care for frail older adults in the community: utilisation of services? Can we do more? Anticipatory care planning, integrated care and self-management
  5. Exercise for health; reasons for not moving around for us, for older adults in particular, can we do something?
  6. Pharmacotherapy for preventing and managing frailty and promoting healthy ageing and mental health
  7. Nutritional aspect in the care of frail older adults: assessment, management and cases sharing
  8. Quality of life for frail older adults, and prevention and managing frailty among older adults
  9. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological management in managing chronic conditions for frail older adults
  10. Health services / community services for older adults in Berlin / Germany for health maintenance and prevention and managing frailty among older adults
  11. Promoting healthy ageing: international and local perspectives and actions and further actions

Continuous assessment includes an individual assignment, a group presentation and a group report.
