COMP 2010SED Computing Fundamentals with Java is a two-term, six-credit-unit, 2000-level course within the Bachelor of Computing with Honours in Internet Technology (BCITH) programme suite and the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Computing and Networking (BSCICNH) programme suite. It is a compulsory course for BCITH and BSCICNH. This course is designed to provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of computing and is suitable for students who do not have prior experience in programming. The problem solving aspect of computing will be emphasised. The main focus is to learn an object-oriented programming language (Java) and use it to solve problems. The software development cycle will also be introduced.

Aims

ENGL 1122AED Presentation Skills provides students with a practical approach to mastering presentations effectively. It guides students through all the principles needed for preparing and refining presentations. It also covers the use and development of non-verbal communication skills, visual aids, and delivery skills.

Learning support

This course will be delivered in distance-learning mode. Students are required to work largely by means of self-study using the materials provided, although eight hours of face-to-face tutorial support and one two-hour face-to-face supplementary lecture will also be given. Students will also be able to receive support via the Online Learning Environment (OLE). The instructional materials for ENGL 1122AED are designed to be usable both for students working alone and for tutors.

Assessment

There are two methods of assessing students' progress: continuous assessment through assignments and an examination held at the end of the course.

Continuous assessment

Continuous assessment accounts for 60% of the overall course grade. The course has two assignments and one face-to-face presentation.

  • In Assignment 1, students will be asked to complete essay questions related to Units 1–2, write a three-minute presentation script on a given topic, and read it out to produce an audio recording accordingly.
  • In Assignment 2, students will be asked to complete essay questions related to Units 2–4, write a five-minute presentation script on a given topic, and create presentation slides based on the script.
  • In the face-to-face presentation, students will be required to present what they have prepared in Assignment 2 (i.e. the script and the presentation slides).

The examination, which accounts for 40% of the overall course grade, is an examination that lasts for two hours.

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Equipment

A PC-compatible computer ready for connecting to the Internet is essential. The minimum configuration of the computer is:

  • PC with an x86 CPU or equivalent
  • 1GB RAM
  • Hard disk
  • Sound card with speakers

You need to be familiar with the basic use of a computer including keyboard, mouse and word processing software. Experience in using email, the Internet and the World Wide Web is also essential.

Software

You should have Windows with Microsoft Word. Other software will be downloaded from the Internet. You may need to use OpenOffice to prepare assignment answers.

Set book(s)

There are no set textbooks for the course. Teaching materials will be taken from selected texts.

Students with disabilities or special educational needs

This class is not suitable for inmate students due to the compulsory face-to-face presentation assessment element.
