ENGG 3280SED is a three-credit-unit, one-term, 3000-level course. It is intended for students who wish to study for a BSc (Hons) degree in Electronics.

Aims

This course aims to:

  • teach students the basic understanding of professional identities, and the responsibilities of the engineering profession, as well as its impediments;
  • enable students to know the role of engineers in society;
  • equip students with an adequate sense of professional practice;
  • illustrate to students how to make proper professional decisions;
  • enable students to assess and manage risk; and
  • equip students with concepts and challenges related to globalised engineering

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to acquire the following skills and abilities:

  • Analyse professional identity and its related responsibilities.
  • Discuss professional practice for Hong Kong engineers.
  • Examine engineering issues related to engineers in society.
  • Evaluate engineering risk and management and their challenges.

Contents

The course consists of the following study units:

  • Responsibility in engineering and organisation
  • Professional practice
  • The engineer in society
  • Engineering responsibility in risk assessment and management, and globalised engineering

Learning support

There are five forms of tutor-student interaction to be provided in this course, including tutorials, surgeries, online discussion board, email and telephone tutoring. There will be a total of four one-hour tutorials and four one-hour surgeries throughout the course.

Tutorial and surgery sessions are used to present and explain the concepts and technologies in computer networks.

Assessment

Course assessment includes continuous assessment (50% weighting) and a final examination (50% weighting).

Continuous assessment includes two assignments (25% and 25% weighting).

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
