This is a five-credit course in the Master of Arts in Cultural & Heritage Tourism programme. It is presented in English (supplemented by Chinese with regard to research pertaining to Chinese culture and history).

Aims
The course aims to introduce students to study skills employed in academic research, and to equip students with the essential practical and conceptual skills and techniques necessary for academic research, with specific reference to cultural and heritage tourism. Students will be introduced to topics such as the literature review, conventions of academic writing, conceptual issues concerning research, qualitative and quantitative methods, issues concerning historical documents in Chinese culture and history and the use of such documents, issues concerning other documents and sources of data in research in Chinese culture and history, and so on.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to Research and Research Processes

  • Sources and data

  • Format and citation for academic writing

  • Literature review

  • Research approaches and design

  • Quantitative research methods

  • Qualitative research methods

  • Research ethics

  • Presenting research results and discussion

Contact hours
Normally three hours per week.

Assessment
There will be three assignments, focusing on citation format (20%),literature review (40%) and research methods (40%). Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
