Aims

The course aims to acquaint students with knowledge of management accounting concepts and practices from the strategic perspective. It focuses on the role of cost management in helping companies to sustain their business in competitive environments through strategy implementation.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

Review of cost terms, purposes and cost-volume-profit analysis
Cost estimation and costing systems
Budgeting and variance analysis
Cost allocation and customer-profitability analysis
Cost allocation: Joint products and by-products
Strategy, balanced scorecard, and strategic profitability analysis
Introduction to strategic management accounting
Information for decision-making
Planning, budgeting and forecasting
Project management
Performance management
Tools for creating and managing value

Contact hours

A total of 66 hours across two terms, consisting of 11 three-hour lectures and 11 three-hour tutorial classes.

Assessment

The continuous assessment portion of the course accounts for 100% of the total course score. CPA Australia's Strategic Management Accounting subject examination counts towards 30% of the continuous assessment. Students are required to submit written assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Students will need access to a personal computer with Internet connection.
