SOL celebrates first anniversary

Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) established the School of Open Learning (SOL) on 1 September 2021 to coordinate and enhance the delivery of distance-learning and part-time programmes. On 26 August 2022, in celebration of its first anniversary, the School shared the University's achievements in open learning and its commitment to employing various means, such as the agile-blended learning approach, to meet the needs of distance and part-time learners for effective learning.

Secretary for Education Dr Choi Yuk-lin, Council Chairman Ir Dr Conrad Wong Tin-cheung, Deputy Council Chairman Henry Tong Sau-chai, Executive Committee Member of Council Ms Yvonne Choi Ying-pik, President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Provost Prof. Reggie Kwan Ching-ping, and Dean of SOL Dr Li Kam-cheong of HKMU officiated at the ceremony. On the occasion, presidents and representatives from various leading overseas open universities extended their congratulations to the School via video messages.

Addressing the ceremony, Dr Choi Yuk-lin said that open and distance education has played a vital role in nurturing talents in Hong Kong over the past three decades. She praised the University's mission of 'Education for All', which has enabled many aspiring learners to gain access to higher education.

HKMU crowned Gold for volunteer service

The University has been making great efforts in promoting service learning. In the 'Easy Volunteer' Volunteer Service Award 2021 organised by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, HKMU students' active engagement and devotion in community services were recognised with a Gold Award for Volunteer Service (Groups).

Secretary for Housing shares stories behind isolation facilities construction

The University held the fifth talk of the 'Talk of the Metropolis' series on 26 July. Ms Winnie Ho Wingyin, Secretary for Housing of the HKSAR Government, was invited to share her experience in the construction of community isolation facilities during the pandemic under the topic 'Turning impossible to possible — Construction of the community isolation facilities and beyond'.

New Council appointments

In addition to the appointment of Ir Dr Conrad Wong as Chairman of the Council, the University welcomes the appointment to the Council of Mr Henry Tong Sau-chai as Deputy Chairman, and Mr Arnold Cheng Ka-kui as Treasurer, for a term of three years starting 20 June. Mr Tong and Mr Cheng have joined the Council since 2014 and 2017 respectively.

We also welcome the new appointments of Ir Dr Alan Lam Hiu-fung, founder and CEO of Sengital Limited; Mr Bosco Law Ching-kit, Deputy Chairman and CEO of Laws Group; and Mr Yu Chung-leung, Partner of Lee and Yu Certified Public Accountants. The three new members have been appointed on 20 June for a term of three years, while current member Ms Catherine Mun Lee-ming has been re-appointed for three years. 

Moreover, the University would like to express its gratitude to outgoing Treasurer Mr Peter Wan, who has joined the Council since 2009 and became the Treasurer in 2014, for his important contributions. We also thanked outgoing members Dr Chow Pak-chin and Mr Gary Yeung Man-yui for their valuable service over the past few years.

Joining hands with industries

The University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Kowloon Motor Bus Co. (1933) Ltd to launch the KMB × HKMU Career Taster Programmes this summer. The programmes included placement opportunities in various fields such as marketing and video production, and short-term career-oriented courses and workshops on practical topics such as use of English in a listed company, case studies and legal aspects of vocational rehabilitation, and basic bus mechanical engineering.

The School of Science and Technology also signed memoranda with three separate parties. First was an MOU with CMA Industrial Development Foundation Limited, with which the School had previously conducted short-term testing projects, to foster development of the testing and certification industry in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.

With the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), S&T signed a memorandum of cooperation that allows it to better understand the needs of society and users via the EMSD's E&M InnoPortal, thereby developing people-oriented technologies to help build a smart city.

Finally, an MOU was signed with Hong Yip Service Company Ltd to provide HKMU civil and building services engineering students and graduates with internship and management training opportunities in shopping malls and residential buildings managed by Hong Yip.
