Flow Injection
Analyzer
[Lachat QuickChem
8500]
Description:
Flow injection
analysis (FIA) is a
technique for
automated,
wet‐chemical
analysis. The
methodology used by
the flow injection
analyzer is similar
to that used by
other continuous
flow auto analyzers,
which share
continuously flowing
reagent streams,
reaction
‘manifolds’, and
flow‐through
detectors. FIA is
used in labs where
the amount of
testing needed is
too high for manual
methods.

Free and Open Source
Software (FOSS)
Description:
The QESS project
:“Enhancing teaching
and learning by
effective
utilization of free
and open source
software” aims to
establish a
community of
practice for
supporting the
teaching staff and
students of Chu Hai
College of Higher
Education, and
possibly for other
self-financing
post-secondary
sectors in Hong
Kong, to effectively
utilize free and
open source software
(FOSS) and other
free tools to level
up their digital
literacy and enrich
their teaching and
learning experience
and simultaneously,
enhance their
teaching and
learning quality. We
identified, selected
and examined the
FOSS available on
the internet and
then tested and
reviewed their
functions and usage
to ensure their
applicability on
pedagogical content.
We then chose around
a hundred of
relevant FOSS and
reviewed them and
trained up our
teachers and
students on their
applications through
the form of
workshops and
handbooks, etc.

Total Organic Carbon Analyzer
Description:
Total Organic Carbon (TOC) is an indirect analysis of organic matters present in solid or liquid samples. The analytical process involves oxidizing soluble, insoluble and macromolecular organic compounds at 680°C in an oxygen-rich environment with platinum catalyst and detection and quantification of carbon dioxide gas produced by the oxidation reactions using an infrared gas analyzer (NDIR). Our TOC Analyzer features the capability of measuring Total carbon (TC), Total organic carbon (TOC), Inorganic carbon (IC), and Nonpurgeable organic carbon (NPOC). It provides a detection range of 4mg/L to 30,000 mg/L. It is equipped with an autosampler with a capacity of 56 X 40ml vails and a Total Nitrogen (TN) Unit for liquid samples.

Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy
Description:
Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) analyses the concentration of trace elements in liquid samples based on the principle that electromagnetic radiation may either be absorbed or transmitted when passing through a molecule depending upon the wavelength of the radiation. The concentration of a specific element can be measured by detecting the absorption (i.e. reduction in the intensity) of the radiation in a specific range of wavelengths after interaction with the molecule. Our AAS is capable of quantifying trace elements in both dilute and concentrated samples, from ppb to %, within seconds. The light source unit can house up to 6 hollow cathode lamps at a time for the detection of 6 different trace elements.
