Talks on English pronunciation and Chinese folk scripts

In a talk on 19 April, renowned English expert and School of Arts and Social Sciences Honorary Professor Prof. Phillip Sun discussed the accurate pronunciation and origin of words beginning with ‘c’. Prof. Joseph Lau, another Honorary Professor of the School and a prominent Chinese scholar, shared his views on life as revealed in the short stories of the Tang Dynasty and folk scripts of the Song and Ming Dynasties in a talk on 26 April.

New line-up for Council


Mr Edward Cheung

Mr Michael Wong

Mr Edward Cheung, a consultant in the law firm Woo, Kwan, Lee & Lo and a director of several publicly listed companies, who joined the OUHK Council in 1997, was appointed Deputy Chairman from 2008 to 2011. He replaced Mr Stanley Ko, who had served the Council for ten years, first as a member and then as Deputy Chair since 2002. Another Council retiree was Mr Thomas Chan, who had been a member from 2002. Mr Michael Wong, an Executive Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd, was appointed a member for a two-year term. Three current members were reappointed: Ms Quince Chong and Dr Susie Lum for a two-year term from June, and Prof. John A Spinks for one year from October 2008.


Three more trophies for Dragon Boat team

The OUHK Dragon Boat team came third in the Post Secondary Championships and Open Championships of the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Regatta 2008 held in Shatin on 14 June. The team also received the 4th prize in the Shatin Dragon Boat Competition on 8 June. More than 20 members of the University’s Dragon Boat Club, including for the first time some full-time students, took part in the competitions.

HRU study delegation to the UK

To study the performance review and management systems for academic staff, two members of the University’s Human Resources Unit visited eight universities and two associations in the UK with three counterparts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong on 11–15 August. They were sponsored by the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Alumni Association inauguration and forum

On 28 September, the OUHK Alumni Association inaugurated its new board and held a forum entitled ‘How to Raise the Status of OUHK Graduates in Hong Kong Society’. Vice President Prof. Danny Wong, Students’ Union Chairman Wong Tsz, human resources consultant Ms Flora Pun and the Association’s Chairman Lau Kim-man spoke at the forum. The Association also organized a New Year Countdown Dance Party on 31 December 2008.
 
October 2008

New campus house-warming

Following the opening of Campus Phase Two on 16 September, a house-warming party with Chinese traditional lion dances and the cutting of roast pig was organized on 6 October. The OUHK Council Deputy Chairman Mr Edward Cheung, Treasurer Dr Eddy C Fong and members Mr Peter Lo and Prof. Philip Yeung attended the event.




UKOU visit

President Prof. John C Y Leong led a team of senior staff on a visit to the Open University, UK, on 22–23 October to exchange information on academic, IT and operational developments and to strengthen the relationship between the two institutions.


Singapore exchange study tour

A delegation of postgraduate students from the Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration visited Singapore to learn about the factors behind the Lion City’s economic success and its strategies for facing the global financial crisis. The five-day itinerary gave students an in-depth look at the inner workings of the city’s business world and its close linkage with the government.

Anniversary Banquet

The OUHK celebrated its 19th Anniversary on 5 November at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre with a banquet attended by over 700 students, alumni, staff, tutors and guests. Mr Raymond H C Wong, the HKSAR Permanent Secretary for Education and Guest of Honour, said that the OUHK is the forerunner in promoting continuing education and lifelong learning in Hong Kong and thanked the University for its contributions to society on behalf of the Government. Twenty-six full-time staff and 35 part-time tutors who had worked at the OUHK for ten years received Long Service Awards.


Honorary University Fellowships


On the same day, the University awarded Honorary Fellowships to five long-term supporters. They were Vocational Training Council Executive Director Dr Carrie Willis, Myer Jewelry Manufacturer Ltd Chairman Dr David Sin, Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Walton Li, Legislative Council member the Hon. Mrs Sophie Leung, and Prospectful Holdings Ltd Chairman Mr Bunny Chan.


Students’ Union inauguration

The inauguration ceremony for the Students’ Union – at which Dr Patrick Ho, a Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference National Committee member and former Secretary for Home Affairs, and Council Deputy Chairman Mr Edward Cheung officiated – was held on 19 November, and was attended by representatives of the student unions of other local universities.

17th Congregation

 
 

Over 5,900 graduates received their awards from the OUHK at the two-day Congregation ceremony held on 11 and 12 December at Queen Elizabeth Stadium, bringing the total number of graduates to over 57,000. The 2008 graduates included about 800 full-time students and 600 from mainland China. About 45% of the graduates received undergraduate degrees and about 25% postgraduate awards. Presiding over the four sessions of the Congregation were Council Chairman Dr the Hon. Charles Lee, Deputy Chairman Mr Edward Cheung and Treasurer Dr Eddy C Fong.

In the morning of 12 December, the OUHK conferred honorary doctorates on five distinguished individuals: Mr Solomon Lee, a seasoned industrialist and philanthropist; Dr Daniel Tse, former Hong Kong Baptist University President; Mr Henry Tang, the HKSAR Chief Secretary for Administration; and Prof. Howard Goldblatt, a renowned translator of Chinese literature.

New OUHK pay structure and variable pay scheme for LiPACE

Following a pay review conducted by a consultant, a new pay structure intended primarily for new staff was introduced from 2 January, bringing the remuneration packages of the OUHK closer to those of other local tertiary institutions but still enabling it to retain a competitive edge in recruiting staff. A performance-based variable pay scheme was also introduced for new recruits and promoted staff of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Professional and Continuing Education in view of its more competitive and commercially-oriented operational environment.

New Head of Public Affairs

 

Ms Jacqueline Cheng, a senior executive with an impressive track record in public broadcasting and digital media development, was appointed Head of Public Affairs in February following the retirement of Mr Alex Wong, who had served the University since 1989. Ms Cheng, who was the Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Education City, established the most popular education portal in Hong Kong. She spearheaded the first web-casting media website ‘RTHK on Internet’ in Hong Kong and helped the Hong Kong Jockey Club to set up its Infotainment Department and revamp its Internet strategy.

OUHK supports WWF Earth Hour Campaign

All unnecessary lighting and electrical installations in the Ho Man Tin campus were switched off from 8:30pm to 9:30pm on 28 March in support of the above campaign. The OUHK is also a founding member of ‘Carbon Audit•Green Partner’ – a carbon reduction campaign coordinated by the HKSAR Government – and signed the Carbon Reduction Charter in August 2008.


LiPACE graduation ceremony and appointment of Honorary Advisors

 
Over 480 graduates of diploma/certificate programmes, profess-ional courses and non-local degree programmes offered by the Li Ka Shing Institute of Professional and Continuing Education received their awards at the graduation ceremony on 3 March 2009, during which Chow Sang Sang Holdings International Ltd Director and Deputy General Manager Mr Winston Chow presented Quality Tourism Services Association Scholarships to students. Appointment certificates were presented to two new Honorary Advisors – former Director of Fire Services Mr Joe Kwok and Cantonese opera master Mr Chan Siu-fung.

A student’s translated work published

 
 


Part-time student Martin Merz’s translation of an award-winning, best-selling novel by Chinese writer Wang Gang on the pangs of growing up in Urumchi during the Chinese Cultural Revolution was published by Viking Penguin in late March 2009. Mr Merz – a student on the Master of Arts in Applied Translation programme – and co-translator Jane Weizhen Pan met with Wang at the Shanghai International Literary Festival on 21 March 2009, during which they did a bilingual reading of the just published novel English and gave a talk on the problems encountered during translation.


Talk by Anson Chan


Former HKSAR Chief Secretary for Administration Mrs Anson Chan was invited by the Student Society of Social Sciences to give a talk on 26 March about her 39 years as a civil servant and legislator. She shared her views on leadership and encouraged students to try their best to realize their full potential.
