The career of Michael Ng distinguishes him from his fellow BBA graduates.

Michael is a pilot in the Jetstream aircraft team of the Government Flying Service (GFS). He vividly remembers 11 September 2002, when a typhoon signal number eight was hoisted. His team flew into the eye of the tropical cyclone and co-ordinated all search parties to rescue some 20 fishermen trapped aboard ships pounded by the huge storm. Michael finds that his flying experience and OUHK study complement each other very well. He is pleased that what he has learned from courses on topics such as human resources management can be readily applied to his job, and he also finds the theories he learns from books relevant to his daily experiences at work.

Since matriculation, Michael has never stopped learning. Soon after he joined the GFS (at that time the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force), he wanted to follow his wife to enrol at the OUHK, but the demanding preparations for GFS training programmes and licence examinations made it impossible. After he passed his examinations five years ago, he wasted no time in beginning his OUHK studies. He will receive his degree from the School of Business and Administration in 2003.

Having to work shifts and irregular hours, it would have been impossible for Michael to pursue studies if not for distance learning and its system of credit accumulation. In view of the continued economic downturn, Michael suggests that the best way to equip oneself is to keep on learning. He values the wide exposure to new ideas and the enhanced analytical skills that result from studying, and he plans to further his studies after a short break.
