The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) is the only university in Hong Kong that offers its courses primarily through distance learning based on open entry. Founded in 1989 by the Hong Kong Government, the University has built up a reputation for quality education and aims to become a regional Centre of Excellence in distance and adult learning.

So far over 120,000 adult learners have studied at the University, and about 21,000 of them have graduated with qualifications at sub-degree, degree and postgraduate levels which are widely recognized by local and overseas employers and educational institutions.

The University's four Schools – Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Administration, Education and Languages, and Science and Technology – teach mainly credit bearing, distance learning programmes. Besides, the Li Ka Shing Institute of Professional and Continuing Education provides tailor-made career training, short courses and face-to-face sub-degree and professional programmes for individuals and corporations. Despite its short history, the University's Centre for Research in Distance and Adult Learning has built up a repository of research data on the Asia Pacific region.
